UK host families for foreign students

Apart from hosting foreign students who wish to learn English, this site is a gold mine of information about all things French. Click on the site map to find out more

host families UK

The way hosting foreign students works differs greatly around the world. This page deals with the UK.

Amendment, May 2007 - the national host organisation which we dealt with (Silc UK) appears to heave ceased trading - so I no longer know of an organisation that covers Britain. Here is one for East London - if anyone knows of others, please email me and I will add them.

Do you want to enrich your cultural experience, and earn money at the same time? Then why not consider becoming a host family for a visitor from France (or maybe elsewhere) who wants to stay with a British family in order to learn English. Our language, English, being the most sought after in the world makes Britain a very popular place for those wishing to learn it. As well as making some money, it's also a great way to make friends. Many stay in touch for years afterwards.

So what is a host family? Well, apart from the obvious man and woman (with or without kids, old or young), it can also be a single woman.

And what are the rules?

To be eligible, you must be a native English speaker who speaks English at home. You must have a room for your guest. If s/he is a child, s/he can share with a child of the same age, but s/he must have their own bed (i.e. not a trucklebed, put-up, or mattress on the floor!).  After that, it depends on who your guest is. For example, it may be a child for a three day school visit, or an adult for a three week intensive English visit, where you teach them one-to-one. Obviously for this latter, you would get paid a lot more, but then you would need to be experienced and qualified in teaching English. It all depends on your accommodation and your motivation!

The organisation, SILC UK, who organises these trips, have been doing so for thirty years now, and have a network of agents in many areas of the country (and other areas where they intend to set up a network). So, If that's something you'd like to know more about, drop us an email with your address, name and phone number. SILC will contact you. SILC will reply to say whether they are looking in your area, and if so a representative will contact you to explain the responsibilities, timings and payments further. Should both parties then wish to proceed, then a representative from SILC will visit you. to ensure that all is well for a prospective student; and of course SILC need to know that you are of good character.

You never know it could turn into a habit! Many of the host families have been taking in students for years.
