Brittany, France

site map

Brittany is the most Westerly area of mainland France

It is made up of 5 Departments. It has 2,000 kilometres (1250 miles - about a third of France's total) coastline.

The Breton Flag has 5 black and 4 white stripes. The 4 white stripes represent the 4 Breton speaking Bishoprics (Breton is akin to Welsh), the 5 black represent the 5 Gallic (French) speaking Bishoprics. In the corner are 11 ermines, representing the 11 kings and dukes who ruled independent Brittany before its incorporation in France (in 1532)
