As well as with holiday homes, this site can enhance your visit to France in many ways. Before you go, don't forget to look at the  Site map

You have a nice house - you want to stay in a nice house in France. Why not do a swap! Stay in France for free! (it's not quite free of course, the companies that arrange swaps make a small charge), and make new friends at the same time. People who take part in home exchange are generally independent travellers who like the idea of getting to know an area and meeting local people rather than staying in hotels with lots of other tourists.

The first question many people ask is 'How can I trust "strangers" to look  after my home?' The simple answer is that the other member will have exactly the same concerns at first. As home exchange is a do-it-yourself type holiday, members spend time organising their exchanges directly through emails and phone calls and, by the time the exchange takes place, both should feel that they know and trust each other and be comfortable leaving their home (which is generally safer than if left empty while away) in the hands of their exchange partners. Of course members only agree to an exchange if it suits them and can restrict their exchange offers, e.g. to non-smokers, to members without small children, etc.

As ever on this site, Stars and Stripes = American Site.

Union Jack = British site

homebase holidays Home base have a great choice in France, and a justly popular site. There is a free, bi-monthly ezine, Home Swappers Newsletter which can be signed up for here. As the newsletter is sent to current and recent members (some of whom are very experienced home exchangers) but also to many subscribers new to the idea of swapping homes, it includes information on various aspects of arranging home swaps. Generally a member's report on a recent exchange is published as the first feature story in each issue; these approach the subject from different angles, involving different country swaps, etc. There is information on the site on the questions that are most often asked about home exchange (www.homebase-hols.com/faq.shtml) and guidelines to act as a reminder list of what to consider before agreeing an exchange, preparing for exchange guests, etc
